5.2 Qualification as a Structural Process
DAP #0A defines PCO Qualification provisionally as:
- A structured and attributable process through which an eligible Physical Artistic Object is assessed against defined cultural, evidentiary, recognition, scope, identity, and procedural requirements in order to determine whether it can hold active Physical Cultural Object status under the proposed CDA Standards framework.
Qualification is:
- structured — it follows an identifiable procedure;
- attributable — responsible actors are known;
- evidence-based — claims must be supported;
- scoped — cultural claims are not represented as universally absolute;
- reviewable — decisions may later be examined;
- versionable — records may change without destroying their history;
- non-scalar — qualification does not rank cultural worth.
It does not manufacture cultural meaning.
5.3 The PCO Qualification Claim
Every qualification process must begin with an explicit claim.
DAP #0A introduces:

The independence principle implies separate records.

should not be merged into one qualification decision merely because the objects are related.
Each requires:
- identity;
- qualification basis;
- authority;
- decision;
- status;
- provenance.
6.42 Shared Evidence May Be Referenced
Separate records do not require duplicated evidence.
For example:
- authorship documentation;
- source-object provenance;
- institutional research;
The records may cross-reference the same evidence.
Thus:

This supports interoperability while preserving object autonomy.
6.43 Qualification Failure in One Domain
Suppose:

does not affect PCO status.
The failure or absence of qualification in one domain should propagate only where a specific qualification-critical dependency exists.
6.44 PCO Withdrawal and CDA
Consider:

Should the linked CDA automatically lose qualification?
DAP #0A concludes:
not automatically.
The CDA must be reassessed only if the reason for PCO withdrawal undermines a qualification-critical element of the CDA.
For example:
Case A
PCO withdrawn because the physical qualification authority used an invalid procedure.
The CDA's independent cultural role may remain unaffected.
Case B
PCO withdrawn because the supposed physical source object was fraudulent, while CDA qualification depended on being an authentic representation of that object.
The CDA may require reassessment.
Thus causality must be explicit.
6.45 CDA Withdrawal and PCO
The reverse logic applies.
If CDA qualification is withdrawn because:
- digital metadata was incorrect;
- governance failed;
- digital provenance was false;
But if the PCO qualification relied heavily on cultural evidence created by that CDA, reassessment may be appropriate.
Again:
dependency determines impact, not mere relationship.
6.46 Reciprocal Evidence
A mature physical–digital cultural system may generate reciprocal evidence.
For example:

This can strengthen both cultural records.
But reciprocal evidence should remain traceable.
Otherwise circular validation could occur:

circular qualification evidence.
6.47 Circular Qualification Must Be Prevented
A valid cultural infrastructure should distinguish:

can be legitimate.

6.50 Relevance to Previous DAP Research
The independent qualification principle is consistent with the broader DAP logic.
Earlier DAP investigations examined digital cultural assets as objects possessing their own structural properties.
DAP #0A does not reverse those findings by making digital qualification dependent on a newly introduced PCO layer.
Instead, it clarifies the missing physical side of cases where a digital object has a physical reference.
Thus:
- DAP #0A extends the ontology without retroactively subordinating CDA to PCO.
6.51 Relevance to Future DAP #8
The independence principle will become crucial for AI-generated digital images.
DAP #8 may investigate a digital object that:
- has no pre-existing physical source;
- arises through human–AI creation processes;
- may later qualify as CDA.
Thus PART VI creates necessary room for:

6.52 Relevance to Future DAP #9
DAP #9 will stress-test the opposite condition:

There the questions may include:
- which object precedes;
- which is original;
- whether both qualify independently;

qualification must begin independently in each domain before relationship structure is evaluated.
This prevents DAP #9 from conflating originality with cultural qualification.
6.53 Institutional Consequence
The ontology also has a direct institutional consequence.
CDA Standards Organization should not maintain a rule such as:
- Only digital objects derived from qualified PCOs can become CDA.
- born-digital art;
- digitally native research objects;
- independent digital cultural infrastructure;
- emerging cultural objects whose physical source has not yet been qualified.
CDA qualification must retain ontological independence from PCO qualification.
6.54 Physical Cultural Layer Does Not Dominate Digital Cultural Layer
The introduction of PCO should therefore not transform the standards architecture into:

6.60 Principal Finding: No Automatic Qualification Inheritance
A second core finding is:

The third major result is especially important:

It is one of the defining findings of DAP #0A.
6.62 Principal Finding: Reciprocal Influence Without Status Transfer
The fourth major finding is:
- PCO and CDA may reciprocally influence one another's cultural context, recognition, documentation, provenance, and continuity without automatically transferring qualification status.
